Trauma-Focused
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) is an evidence-based treatment approach designed specifically to help children and adolescents, along with their caregivers, cope with the effects of traumatic experiences. TF-CBT teaches youth coping skills, how to process traumatic memories, and addresses distorted beliefs related to the trauma.
TF-CBT uses techniques like relaxation, cognitive processing, and gradual exposure (small doses of the stressor to foster resilience and tolerance to distress), all while actively engaging the child's caregiver in the therapeutic process.
Offending caregivers are not involved in treatment.
